Since 1918, the International Institute of Lowell has been dedicated to providing vital immigration and citizenship services to immigrants and refugees. The Institute works for the acceptance of all, regardless of race, religion, country of birth or ethnic origin, as equal participants in life in the United States.
The agency’s work involves refugee resettlement, with case management that includes finding housing and furniture, health care providers and employment training. In addition to resettlement services, IILowell also provides refugees, immigrants and asylum-seekers with education programs and legal services.
The integrated services that are available include:
Assessment of language and employment skills
Employment-oriented English and basic literacy training
Job-readiness training including coaching in interviewing skills
Assistance in preparing job applications and resumes
Assistance in identifying employers and setting up interviews
Post-employment support and counseling, as needed
Our Legal Services department offers a legal clinic and citizenship program.
We see clients on an appointment basis, with interpreters available upon request; we also accommodate emergency walk-ins. Clients include individuals who are legally eligible for status changes or for obtaining citizenship, but who need consultation and assistance from a qualified attorney to properly complete applications to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly the INS) and be prepared for USCIS interviews. We have additionally undertaken a significant community outreach campaign to increase public awareness of the benefits of citizenship.
