Highlights from the Golden Door Award Gala

On April 29th, 2005, the International Institute of Boston honored Dr. Victor Dzau with the Golden Door Award. Dr. Dzau is currently the Chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University and the President and CEO of Duke University Health System, Inc. While in Boston, he was the Hersey Professor of Theory and Practice at Harvard University, and the Chair of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Eugene Braunwald, M.D. highlighted Victor's professional achievements as a researcher, physician and scientist. Paul Farmer, M.D. spoke about Victor's vision of ending dispartities in health care. Nobel peace prize winner, and former Golden Door recipient presented Dr. Dzau with the Golden Door Award. Co-Chairs Henri Termeer of Genzyme and Jack Connors of Partners took the stage to add their accolades. Actively involved in the planning was co-chair Pete Nicholas of Boston Scientific and current Chairman of the Duke Trustees.

Telling his heart-warming story was Mohammad Dadrass. As a doctor in Afghanistan, many in the room were able to relate the passion he holds for his field. He shared the story about his travel to America and how he is now a patient care assistant at a hospital. It was heartening for the many IIB staff who have helped Mohammad along the way to hear of his success and gratitude.

The evening was a great success!! The room was filled with more than 500 of Victor's friends, colleagues and community and business leaders. Over $500,000 was raised for the Dzau Health Access Fund, which will support immigrants and refugees access to health care services and other social services in their journey towards self-sufficiency.
