The son of Cuban refugees, Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is a model candidate for the Golden Door Award, given by the International Institute of Boston, Lowell and Manchester to a citizen of foreign birth or first generation heritage. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to American society through a life of reputation, civic accomplishment and character; alumni include I.M Pei, Yo-Yo Ma, Arthur Fiedler, Laszlo Bonis, George Hatsopoulos, Arthur Loeb and Ben Zander. The International Institute assists over 7,000 immigrants and refugees annually with services that are tailored to meet the individual needs of clients. Services provided include refugee resettlement support; legal representation, advice and assistance; treatment for survivors of torture; employment training and placement; English language and literacy instruction; and economic development and microfinance programs.
